Stories from Catalonias past to make sense of the present.
We are a not-for-profit association that is focused on contributing to the understanding of the Catalan past, and how it has shaped the world we live in today.
Welcome to Catalan History, an association dedicated to the history of Catalonia. We are a group of curious researches that after having lived in Catalonia for several years, have an interest and curiosity in the Catalan history, particularly the booming economy of the 19th century and its contribution to modern day Barcelona and Catalonia. Our curiosity led our researchers to discover a part of Catalan history that seems to have been forgotten or at times deliberately hidden. Our association aims to bring history back to life through several projects and collaborations, providing recognition to those figures that contributed to the development of the vibrant, sophisticated, architecturally and economically rich Catalonia that we know today.
Catalonia is today known as one of the richest regions in Spain, not only econonically, but also culturally and architecturally. From the beautiful capital of the region Barcelona, to the small inland village, every spot is filled with history. To understand Catalonia's grandiosity, it is important to remember that part of history that has led it to be the flourishing region it is nowadays. The 19th century, which is the century our researchers have focused on, has been a turning point for Catalonia due to the booming economy and redevelopment of the capital. This was possible thanks to the so called "indianos", the Catalan businessman that left for the Americans to find their wealth. The majority of the indianos came back to their madre patria as the rich noblemen that changed the perception of the Catalan burgeoisie and which consequently, through a considerable injection of funds, led to a flourishing redevelopment of the Catalan region, and specifically Barcelona. This wealth is nowadays visible through the majestic buildings in the capital, which are the proof of the success of the indianos and the strong feeling of patriotism they felt in leaving their adopted home America to come back to their beloved country. We have learned that the history of the past interests us only in so far as it illuminates the history of the present, and since we are still benefitting from the splendous times of the 19th century as well as being surrounded by the tangible proof of these businessmen's success, , we should celebrate and bring that part of history back to life.
